There are moments in EvE when I try to emulate what my character is, a member of CALNAV, but it is very much an individual decision, i.e. have you listened to the SWA Corp channel!!? Not a lot of RP there, so one does the best one can.

In EvE there is even a stigma attached to playing this way. Some have come back and asked why I have asked permission of them or other players to loot or salvage their abandoned wrecks in Caldari space. Well, I am a member of CALNAV conducting combat patrols, not a thief. Others just don't seem to understand that concept.Latrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06788342809089685009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382843540790360746.post-46125673621498483822008-10-04T14:38:00.000-04:002008-10-04T14:38:00.000-04:00Mynxee - yeah, I started this one as a way to get ...Mynxee - yeah, I started this one as a way to get people discussing the topic, since it's something I have an academic interest in (hey, I do tabletop RP sometimes and hang out with a Firefly RP group in Second Life). Was hoping for a few more responses, but ah, well ^_^Ivanneth Maethorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10281499789304894480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382843540790360746.post-39348066089319251772008-10-04T10:33:00.000-04:002008-10-04T10:33:00.000-04:00FW was fun from the perspective of being able to j...FW was fun from the perspective of being able to jump into a fleet at a moment's notice and *sometimes* find things to kill. But seriously, not a lot different from gate-camping with pirate friends...just bigger and typically a lot less well-organized/cohesive. It's worked to get folks a bit more familiar with and confident about venturing into low sec--at least in the contested areas. Over time, I suspect that comfort level will contribute to overall increased low sec traffic.

RP'ing...hmmm. Too much work to do in-game all the time (though I do and say certain things in-game as Mynxee that I might not in RL--*MIGHT NOT* haha). But I love reading well-written IC blogs like Ombey's.

Your articles are always thought-provoking, Shae.Carole Pivarnikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06787775846290065794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382843540790360746.post-28713876463566258472008-10-03T09:13:00.000-04:002008-10-03T09:13:00.000-04:00Ombeve: I enjoy reading your blogs because they're...Ombeve: I enjoy reading your blogs because they're well-written and entertaining; I've seen a few in-character blogs which just don't hold attention as well or - worse - fall out a bit too far from the known Eve universe mechanics. I'm no RP-er; I've done it a few times, in the presence of other RPers in their designated channels, but it's not what I enjoy about Eve.

Kirith: Personally I have little experience dealing with the faction war aspects of the game; I've not spent much time in Minmatar space apart from that little foray into Amamake (and the last time I had an alt in Hek, it was dead as a stone pigeon), and the rest of what I know is through dealing Quam Singulari and their (ineffectual) station-camping carrier in Covryn. It suppose that colours my opinions towards it, and I'd love to hear more from the other side (I do read Letrange's blog, since it gives a different perspective).Ivanneth Maethorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10281499789304894480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382843540790360746.post-57548643219365833002008-10-03T07:31:00.000-04:002008-10-03T07:31:00.000-04:00Personally I don't think the goal of EA/FW was Rol...Personally I don't think the goal of EA/FW was Role playing. From what I can tell, the goal was to introduce large scale alliance-like warfare to low sec (primarily) and high sec (secondarily) that any couple week old noob or grizzled old veteran could join and participate in.

I think it succeeded in that goal from my time in the Minmatar militia last summer. Time will tell if the model holds up.Kirith Kodachihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12322297953184168725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382843540790360746.post-43740748650311955392008-10-03T06:20:00.000-04:002008-10-03T06:20:00.000-04:00Very good article. I agree with you, the FW pre-release news articles were absolutely excellent- indeed, the 2 biggest read stories on my blog are when I posted about the Malkalen station being under attack, the ramming of the station.

As for me, I do my blogging in-character as it allows me much more scope for creativity. I can invent what I like pretty much as long as it sits comfortably in the Eve Universe. I also think people like to read in-character blogs as it brings Eve a bit more to life for them without getting too bogged down in the RP aspect.

Which brings me onto RP. I respect the RP'ers but I think the sheer weight of RP material out there (and how spread out it is) puts people off getting into it/ more (myself included).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
